High-speed chase in Wallaceburg leads to several charges

A 44-year-old Walpole Island man is facing several charges in connection with a high-speed chase with Chatham-Kent police in Wallaceburg Wednesday morning.

Police said an officer on patrol saw a vehicle travelling on Dufferin Avenue with no rear licence plate.

The officer attempted to pull the driver over on Elm Street, but the accused failed to stop and began speeding and ran stop signs at Turnbull Avenue and Chestnut Drive, police said.

The accused was pulled over as he drove back onto Dufferin Avenue.

Crystal methamphetamine was found on the accused when he was being searched during the arrest, police said.

Investigation also revealed the accused did not have a licence and the front licence plate was not registered to any vehicle.

The man has been charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, use of plate not authorized for the vehicle, driving with no licence and drug possession.

He was released with a Feb. 28 court date.

Failing to comply

A 40-year-old Chatham man landed in custody after attracting the attention of a Chatham-Kent police by speeding.

Police said the accused, who was released from court last May with several conditions including not to be outside his residence with alcohol in his system, was spotted speeding on St. Clair Street in Chatham just before 5 a.m. Thursday.

The officer caught up to the vehicle and stopped it on Joseph Street.

Through investigation, the officer suspected the accused was driving while under the influence of alcohol. A roadside breath test was administered, confirming the officer’s suspicion, police said.

The accused was arrested for breaching his release conditions by having alcohol in his system. During a search while being arrested, police said the accused was found with cocaine.

He was charged with failing to comply and drug possession, and taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Wrong plates

A 26-year-old Merlin man has an upcoming date at the Provincial Offences Court after a Chatham-Kent police officer ran a licence plate check on the vehicle he was driving.

Police said an officer on patrol Wednesday night in Tilbury saw a green Mercedes vehicle travelling on Queen Street.

A query of the licence plates revealed they were expired and registered to a red Jeep, police said.

After the vehicle was stopped on Mill Street, police said the man could not provide insurance, which resulted in him being charged for the offence.

The licence plates were seized and the vehicle was towed, police said.

The man is required to be in POA court on April 2.

Traffic enforcement

Two motorists were charged during a traffic enforcement initiative by Chatham-Kent police in Blenheim on Wednesday afternoon on McGeorge Street near John Street.

One driver was charged for disobeying a stop sign and the other driver was charged with driving while under suspension.

Police remind drivers that a vehicle must come to a complete stop at a stop sign and failure to do so, could result in a $110 fine and three demerit points.
