Campaigners have been calling on officials in the country to take action to deal with abusive fans
THE ITALIAN FA has given referees in Serie A new powers to enable them to better deal with racism during matches.
The news comes after outrage over the racist abuse Napoli player Kalidou Koulibaly was subjected to at the end of last year.
Monkey chants were directed at Koulibaly during his team’s Serie A Boxing Day match against Inter Milan.
Despite several calls from Napoli manager Carlo Ancelotti for the game to abandoned as the abuse continued, the match went on.
Koulibaly was eventually sent off, and given a two-match ban, after he received a red card.
