KOMOKA – Dane Johnstone’s hat trick led the Chatham Maroons to a 6-4 comeback win over the Komoka Kings on Saturday.
The Maroons trailed 3-0 early in the first period, but they scored four goals in the second period for a 4-3 lead before a crowd of 375 at the Komoka Wellness & Recreation Complex.
After the Kings drew even in the third, Johnstone completed his hat trick with the winning goal at 11:20.
Nolan Gardiner added an empty-netter.
Sean O’Brien and ex-King Brett Fisher began the Maroons’ comeback with short-handed goals 1:33 apart early in the second period.
Maroons goalie Tristan Lewis stopped 18 of 19 shots after replacing call-up Tiago Rocha.
Rocha was pulled after giving up three goals on eight shots in the opening 6:47. The Hamilton native was called up from the Oakville Midget ‘AAA’ Rangers.
The Maroons (24-11-2-3) are in third place in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference.
The Kings took their 3-0 lead on goals by Spencer Lapointe, Blake McConnell and Joel Mazzilli in a span of 1:26.
O’Brien and Fisher potted their short-handed goals in the second period at 4:13 and 5:46, respectively.
Johnstone scored on a power play at 8:56 and followed with the go-ahead goal at 19:58.
Kurt Watson scored the Kings’ tying goal in the third at 5:41.
Nathan Young made 19 saves for the sixth-place Kings (18-20-1-2).
Zach Power and Maddux Rychel each had two assists for the Maroons.
