Kings, Blades to face off
The third-place Dresden Kings will host the sixth-place Blenheim Blades at 8 p.m. Monday in Game 1 of their best-of-seven quarter-final in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.
Game 2 is at 7 p.m. Thursday in Blenheim.
Game 3 is Friday, Feb. 8, in Dresden at 7:30 p.m. Game 4 is Sunday, Feb. 10, in Blenheim at 7 p.m.
If necessary, Game 5 is Monday, Feb. 11, in Dresden, Game 6 is Thursday, Feb. 14, in Blenheim and Game 7 is Friday, Feb. 15, in Dresden.
The Kings (29-9-0-2) had 60 points, 23 more than the Blades (17-20-2-1).
The Kings won the season series 4-1.
Lakers lose season finale
LAKESHORE – The Wallaceburg Lakers were outshot 45-8 by the Lakeshore Canadiens in a 4-1 loss in Friday’s season finale in the PJHL Stobbs Division.
Canadiens goalie Nolan Hakr of Chatham made seven saves. He lost his shutout when Zander Wright scored with 3:47 left in the third period.
Lakers goalie Patrick Timpany made 41 saves.
The Lakers (1-37-0-2) finished in last place. They’ve missed the playoffs for eight consecutive years.
Tycen Chittle had a natural hat trick and Jake Nimmo also scored for the Canadiens (28-7-2-3), who moved one point ahead of the Dresden Kings for a second-place finish.
The Canadiens will play the seventh-place Wheatley Omstead Sharks (16-22-0-2) in a best-of-seven conference quarter-final.
Game 1 will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Lakeshore.
Nicholas scores try
SYDNEY, Australia – Canada gave unbeaten New Zealand all it could handle, but still lost 17-7 in women’s Cup quarterfinal action at the Sydney Sevens on Saturday.
Canada bounced back from a poor preliminary round to test the unbeaten Black Ferns, who had won the first two stops of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Series this season.
The win – the Black Ferns’ third straight over Canada this season – improved New Zealand’s record to 16-0-0 this season. The Canadian women, meanwhile, can finish no higher than fifth in Sydney.
The Canadian women were fortunate to make their Cup quarterfinals after losing to Ireland 15-14 and Russia 12-7 in the preliminary round.
Breanne Nicholas of Blenheim scored a try against Ireland.
Still, the second-ranked Canadian women, who beat No. 11 Fiji 36-12 to open the day, made it to the Cup quarterfinals as a third-place team. Nicholas kicked a conversion against Fiji.

Brodie sets up two goals
WASHINGTON – Calgary Flames defenceman T.J. Brodie of Dresden had two assists in a 4-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Friday.
Brodie has seven points in his last four games and nine points in six games.
He has 6-21-27 totals in 52 games overall.
Raaymakers first star
LONDON – London Knights goalie Joseph Raaymakers of Chatham was the first star Friday in a 3-2 shootout win over the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League.
Raaymakers made 24 saves for his fifth consecutive win. He didn’t allow a goal in the shootout.
He’s tied for fourth in wins among OHL goalies with a 25-4-3-1 record.
Griffith extends streak
MILWAUKEE – Seth Griffith of Wallaceburg ran his point streak to 10 games Friday with one assist in the Manitoba Moose’s 3-2 overtime win against the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League.
Griffith has a team-leading 31 points in 37 games.
Cougars hold registration
The Chatham-Kent Cougars football program will hold registration Sunday from 12-3 p.m. and Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Blazin BBQ.
