Kings oust Blades in five games

DRESDEN – The Dresden Kings are the first team to reach the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division semifinals.

Brendan Ritchie had a goal and two assists Monday as the Kings beat the Blenheim Blades 6-3 in Game 5 of their quarter-final in Dresden.

The third-seeded Kings won the best-of-seven series 4-1.

The Kings led 3-0 after the first period before 525 fans at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre.

They didn’t let the Blades get closer than two goals the rest of the way.

Dawson Winchester, Nolan VandenBoorn, Eric Carter, Greg Hay and Derek Shaw also scored for the Kings. Lucas Spence had three assists.

Captain Dede Cato scored two goals for the Blades and Steven Funk added one.

Kings goalie Brett Brochu made 31 saves. Chris Dewulf of the Blades made 37.

Winchester led the Kings in the series with 10 points. He was a mid-season pickup from the Essex 73’s.

Ritchie and Spence had seven points apiece.

Cato and Funk scored seven of the Blades’ nine goals. Cato had four and Funk three.
