Kings' VandenBoorn, Brochu win division awards

Nolan VandenBoorn started filling the net in the Dresden Kings’ season opener and never stopped.

The 21-year-old forward scored two goals in their first game and had 11 goals after only six games.

He finished with career-high totals of 42 goals and 71 points, leading the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division in both categories.

VandenBoorn has been chosen the most valuable player in the Stobbs Division.

Kings goalie Brett Brochu was also honoured as the rookie of the year.

Brendan Ritchie of the Kings was the runner-up in voting for the most dedicated player.

VandenBoorn had 11 multi-goal games, including two hat tricks, in his overage season. In early October, he scored in overtime in four consecutive games.

He never went more than two straight games without a goal.

The Ridgetown native was second in goals and tied for 12th in points in the entire PJHL.

VandenBoorn, a former Chatham Maroon, also set career-highs with 29 assists and 110 penalty minutes.

William Stadder of the Essex 73’s was the runner-up in MVP voting.

Brochu led the division in wins (27), games played (38) and minutes played (2,168:27) as a 16-year-old.

The London Knights draft pick from Tilbury posted a 27-11-0 record with a 2.46 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

Blenheim Blades forward Cameron Symons was the runner-up in rookie of the year voting. He had 20-10-30 totals in 31 games.

Austin Jennings of the Amherstburg Admirals won the Ronny “Tuukka” Betterley Award as defenceman of the year. Adam Gaiarin of the 73’s was the runner-up.

Michael Vieira of the 73’s was chosen the most dedicated player.

Lakeshore Canadiens netminders Nolan Hakr of Chatham and Erik Morneau had the best team GAA. Admirals goalie Ben Larder had the best individual GAA (1.89).

Canadiens head coach Anthony Iaquinta and assistants Rene Lognoin, Ron Soucie, Milan Dobric and Laine Parent are the coaching staff of the year. The 73’s were the runners-up.

Corina Bortignon of the Admirals won the Don Brooker Volunteer of the Year Award.
