New York, February 5
A politically enfeebled President Donald Trump will face the nation on Tuesday night with his State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress that was put on hold by his Democratic Party adversaries in a budget war where he lost the first round.
His nationally-televised speech (at 7.30 am on Wednesday in India) in the House of Representatives’ chamber that a sixth of the US population is expected to watch will be his attempt at clawing his way back to relevance.
It was in the House that his party lost the majority last November and he suffered a personal defeat last month when he could not get it to agree to allocate $5.7 billion in the budget for promise of a wall along the Mexican border to deter smuggling and illegal immigration.
Trump will focus on key issues like immigration, national security and trade and call for unity in a hugely divided Congress. Contrary to his aggressive tweets and his frequent lashing out against the Democratic leadership, Trump intends to portray a picture of national unity in resolving the challenges being faced by the country.
The address is the keynote prime time speech by the president to the Congress in which he sets out his legislative agenda and national priorities for the next year. — Agencies
