Wallaceburg’s Selkirk Bridge to close several months for repair

If you drive regularly in Wallaceburg, expect to take alternative routes to get where you’re going until September.

The Lord Selkirk Bridge, one of the main connections between north and south Wallaceburg over the Sydenham River, is to close Feb. 4 and is expected to remain that way until just before Labour Day.

The bridge will undergo a multi-million-dollar rehabilitation and will be completely closed to traffic. The only exception will be the WAMBO weekend in August when the bridge will be accessible for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The bridge was originally constructed in 1950.

Heavy traffic is encouraged to use the Baseline bridge as a detour during construction, while local and commercial traffic is being detoured over the Murray Street bridge.

To deal with the increased traffic, temporary traffic signals are expected to be placed at the Murray Street And Reaume Avenue intersection.

Due to issues with the Lord Selkirk Bridge, large trucks have been detoured to the Baseline bridge for the past couple of years and there are weight restrictions for the Lord Selkirk Bridge.

Once the rehab work is complete, the load restrictions will be lifted.

In December, council approved the tender for the rehab of the Lord Selkirk Bridge in the amount of $5,341,589 to Hamilton-based Landform Civil Infrastructures Inc.

Chatham-Kent administration recommended option was to rehabilitate the structure rather than rebuild, as there are a lot of existing components that are in relatively good shape with many years of remaining service life, according to a report to Chatham-Kent council.

Components such as the concrete and timber foundations; and larger structural steel components are being rehabilitated and not replaced. This rehabilitation is expected to provide approximately 25 years of extended service.

Funding for the rehabilitation will include $3 million from Ontario’s Connecting Links project, which supports work on municipal roads or bridges that connect two ends of a provincial highway through a community or to a border crossing.
