Woodman signs with Lions

Defensive back Josh Woodman of Chatham has signed with the B.C. Lions after playing his first three CFL seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos.

Woodman, 26, was a free agent.

The Ursuline graduate made 35 defensive tackles and 15 more on special teams in 33 games with the Eskimos. He had one sack, one interception and one forced fumble.

The six-foot-one, 195-pound Woodman set career-highs last season with 25 defensive tackles and 11 special-teams tackles in 18 games.

The Eskimos drafted him in 2016 after he played four seasons at Western University. He was a two-time OUA all-star and a 2014 second-team all-Canadian with the Mustangs.

Carleton award candidate

Chatham’s Bridget Carleton of the Iowa State Cyclones is among the 10 candidates for the Cheryl Miller Award, which goes to the best small forward in NCAA Division I women’s basketball.

A watch list of 20 candidates was named in October. The list was cut to 10 on Wednesday.

Also Wednesday, Carleton scored a game-high 34 points on 13-of-23 shooting in the No. 18 Cyclones’ 76-69 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, Texas.

Carleton grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for her 17th career double-double. She had three assists, two steals and was 4-of-7 on three-pointers.

She has nine 30-point games in her career.

Carleton also moved into second place on the Cyclones’ all-time scoring list with 1,890 points. Angie Welle is first with 2,149.

Iowa State (18-6, 8-4 Big 12) will host Oklahoma State on Saturday.
