Carleton leads Iowa State to first-round victory

Senior guard Bridget Carleton of Chatham scored a game-high 23 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones’ 97-61 win over No. 14 New Mexico State in a first-round game in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament Saturday in Ames, Iowa.

Carleton also had seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. She was 3-of-4 from three-point range.

Iowa State (26-8) will host No. 11 Missouri State (24-9) in a second-round game in the Chicago Region at 9 p.m. Monday in Ames.

Missouri State upset No. 6 DePaul 89-78 in the first round.

The Cyclones’ tournament win was their first since 2013. They’ll tie the school record for most wins in a season with another victory.

Jr. Kings win OMHA titles

The Dresden Jr. Kings won two Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships on the weekend.

The Bantam Jr. Kings beat the Otonabee Wolves 8-6 in Game 4 on Sunday at the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre in Dresden to win the six-point ‘DD’ final 6-2.

They also won 5-2 in Game 3 on Saturday in Dresden.

Also Saturday, the Novice Jr. Kings beat the Cayuga Stars 8-2 in Cayuga to complete a three-game sweep of the West ‘DD’ final.

Dresden outscored Cayuga by a combined 23-3 in the series.

Midget Lakers tied in final

The Wallaceburg Lakers are tied 4-4 with the Penetang Flames in the OMHA ‘B’ midget final after splitting two weekend games in Penetanguishene.

The Lakers won 4-3 on Sunday and lost 5-4 on Saturday.

Game 5 in the six-point series will be at 7:50 p.m. Friday at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.

If the teams tie, then Game 6 will be this Saturday in Penetanguishene.

Ex-Maroon wins NCAA crown

Former Chatham Maroons goalie Ryan Wagner won the NCAA Division III men’s hockey championship with Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point beat Norwich 3-2 in overtime at Stevens Point, Wisc.

The top-ranked Pointers (29-0-2) are the first unbeaten team in NCAA Division III men’s history.

Wagner, a freshman from Indianapolis, didn’t play this season. He was on the Maroons in the 2017-18 season.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point has won six NCAA championships.

DeBrouwer in NCAA tourney

Freshman goalie Evan DeBrouwer of Blenheim is going to the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament with the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils (21-12-1) are in the tournament for the first time. This is their third full season against Division I competition.

No. 3 Arizona State will play No. 2 Quinnipiac in a Midwest Regional first-round game Saturday in Allentown, Pa.

DeBrouwer played eight minutes in one game this season. Junior goalie Joey Daccord has played the rest of the minutes.

Arizona State is the first independent team to make the tournament since Alaska Anchorage in 1992-92.

Pataki award finalist in QMJHL

Overage forward Brady Pataki of Wallaceburg is the Moncton Wildcats’ nominee for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s scholastic player of the year award.

The winner will be the player who best combines on-ice performance with academic success.

Each team nominee receives a $400 bursary. The three finalists receive an additional $600 bursary and the winner gets a $1,500 scholarship.

The winner will be named April 3.

Pataki, 20, set career-highs with 15 goals and 12 assists in 62 games this season.

He has committed to the University of Windsor for next season.

Durston scores in victory

Jordan Durston of Wallaceburg scored for the Buffalo Bandits in an 8-6 win over the Toronto Rock on Saturday in the National Lacrosse League in Buffalo, N.Y.

Durston has scored in three straight games and seven of eight.

He has 12-29-41 totals in 15 games for the East Division-leading Bandits (12-3).

Flyers blank Kings in Game 7

Zach Borgiel had a 31-save shutout for the Leamington Flyers in a 3-0 win over the Komoka Kings in Game 7 of their GOJHL Western Conference semifinal Sunday in Leamington.

The top-seeded Flyers rallied from a 3-1 series deficit with three straight wins over the sixth-seeded Kings.

Borgiel had a 20-save shutout and the Flyers scored three goals in the third period Saturday for a 3-0 win in Game 6 in Komoka.

The Flyers will play the second-seeded London Nationals in the final.
