Spence signs with Steelheads

It’s been a whirlwind week for Chatham Maroons defenceman Craig Spence.

Soon after signing with the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League, he was on a bus to Sudbury for their first playoff game Friday night.

“It’s definitely fast, getting down here (to Mississauga) and moving into a billet house,” said the Chatham native, who turned 17 in January.

The Steelheads chose the six-foot-two, 170-pound Spence in the seventh round, 128th overall, in the OHL draft last April.

They kept tabs on him during his rookie season with the Maroons, sending scouts to a few games to give him feedback on his play.

The Steelheads called him earlier this week and told him to be in Mississauga to practise.

He didn’t play Friday and hasn’t been told if he’ll see any action in the post-season.

“It’s definitely a good experience to be up here for playoffs,” said the former Chatham-Kent ‘AAA’ Cyclone. “… It’s an especially big jump (to the OHL). It’s faster and quicker.

“I think I’m fitting in decently well so far. I definitely can improve.”

Spence had three goals, nine assists and 34 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Maroons in the regular season.

He added one goal and two assists in five playoff games.

Spence’s goal is to play with the Steelheads next season, but he doesn’t know what their plans are.

“They haven’t really talked about it,” he said. “Just have a good off-season and come back to camp.”
