268 TODAY - Scores of people have condemned fishermen who caught and killed a pregnant tiger shark earlier this week.
It was later discovered that the shark was carrying close to two dozen pups.
The fishermen said they caught the shark near the oil refinery rig on the western side of the island on Thursday.
But they said they did not know the shark was pregnant until it was brought to shore and gutted.
The shark was carrying 23 pups.
Acting Chief Fisheries Officer Ian Horsford said that a lot of the sharks in the Caribbean region tend to breed during the period January to May.
He is suggesting that fishermen, during this time of the year, restrain from landing sharks.
Antigua and Barbuda has no legislation prohibiting the killing of sharks.
