Cannabis advocates mark 4/20

Calling this year a special 4/20 celebration, local cannabis advocates say they hope to continue to educate people about the benefits.

Joanne Lefebvre and her husband, Dennis, held grand openings in Chatham and Tilbury on Saturday for the two locations of their business, JoDe Hydroponic & Supply.

“We’re just teaching people how to grow and how to produce their own medicine,” she said on Saturday.

Joanne has been a medical marijuana patient and grower for the past 10 years.

She suffered from severe arthritis, lost her mobility and eventually needed to retire from her work in manufacturing.

Undergoing a half dozen surgeries, and many sleepless nights, Joanne was left with the option of taking painkillers, which she did not want to do.

Instead, she found relief through cannabis oil, noting traditional medication would run into the thousands of dollars per month.

“The very first night I took it, I slept for 12 hours, like a baby. I thought I won the lottery,” she said with a laugh. “From there on it’s been wonderful.”

The couple has researched various types of cannabis strains and what uses they have for specific health problems.

At their Tilbury location they plan to provide free classes to the public.

Although Joanne was permitted to use medical cannabis previously, she said last year’s legalization simply made it more affordable and accessible.

“We’re getting 80 and 90-year-olds turning to it, because they are on a host of pain pills, sleeping pills, anti-depressants,” she said, adding that cannabis can help restore some of their quality of life.

As long-time supporters, Dennis said the main goal is education concerning the medical aspect and making sure people have the right information.

“This is the time people got to get out now and make their own medicine and not depend on pharmaceuticals,” he said.

The store does not sell marijuana at this time, as the area did not receive a retail location as of yet. However, they plan to continue to lobby for a licence when more are issued.

The business locations are 593 Grand Ave. E. in Chatham and 11 Queen St. N. in Tilbury. For more information, search for JoDe Hydroponic & Supply on Facebook.
