Peewee Outlaws win LLFHL crown
The Chatham Peewee ‘BB’ Outlaws won the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League championship Sunday in Toronto.
Jeanette Legere scored the first goal and set up Ally Fisher for the second goal in a 2-0 win over the Hamburg Hawks in the gold-medal game.
The West Division champion Outlaws reached the final by placing first in the round-robin with a 2-0-2 record.
Libby Pink and Legere scored in a 2-0 win over the Central East champion Markham-Stouffville Stars in the opener.
Legere scored again in a 1-1 tie with the South Central champion Hawks.
Savana Smith, Paytyn Logan-Whiteye and Legere each had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over the East champion Napanee Crunch. Meghan Fife also scored and Amaya Jacobs had two assists.
The Outlaws ended the round-robin with a 0-0 tie against the Central champion Kitchener Lady Rangers.
The Outlaws qualified for the championship weekend by knocking off the South Huron Sabres and Huron Heat in West Division playoff series.
Bergeron, Falcons ousted in overtime
Head coach Chris Bergeron of Wallaceburg guided the Bowling Green Falcons to the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament for the first time in 29 years this season.
The Falcons’ season ended Saturday with a 2-1 overtime loss to defending national champion Minnesota Duluth in a Midwest Region semifinal in Allentown, Pa.
The Falcons (25-11-5) finished with the most wins in Bergeron’s nine-year tenure.
“It was a really good year,” Bergeron said, “but we define great as winning a championship and making it to the national tournament and winning 20 games. That’s what we define as great. Unfortunately, we fell short.”
The Falcons were third in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and suffered an overtime loss to Minnesota State in the WCHA final.
DeBrouwer, Devils lose in NCAA tourney
Blenheim’s Evan DeBrouwer and the Arizona State Sun Devils lost 2-1 to Quinnipiac in a Midwest Region semifinal in the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament Saturday in Allentown, Pa.
DeBrouwer, a freshman goalie, didn’t play in the season-ending loss.
The Sun Devils were in the NCAA tournament for the first time. This was only their third full season at the Division I level.
Goure tests well at OHL combine
Deni Goure of the Chatham-Kent ‘AAA’ Cyclones ranked fifth among forwards in off-ice fitness testing at the OHL development combine Saturday in Oshawa.
Seventy-six players eligible for the Ontario Hockey League took part in the two-day combine, which wrapped up with round-robin games Sunday.
Goure scored for Team Lindros in an 8-4 loss to Team Stamkos.
Team Ekblad won the championship based on results from the games and from the on- and off-ice testing. Team Lindros was second out of four teams.
The OHL draft will be held this Saturday.
Griffith leading Moose in points
Seth Griffith of Wallaceburg leads the AHL’s Manitoba Moose with 35 assists and 49 points in 62 games.
Griffith scored his 14th goal in a 4-3 overtime loss to the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.
He’s scored in two of his last three games after going scoreless in nine games.
Nationals one win from beating Flyers
The London Nationals are one win away from celebrating their fourth straight Western Conference championship in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
The second-seeded Nationals own a 3-0 lead over the top-seeded Leamington Flyers in the best-of-seven final going into Game 4 on Wednesday in London.
Noah Tooke scored twice in the Nationals’ 5-3 win in Game 3 on Sunday in Leamington. Cohen Kiteley had two empty-net goals.
Ex-Chatham Maroons forward Josh King scored for the Flyers.
On Saturday, the Nationals scored four straight goals in the third period for a 5-2 comeback win in Game 2 in London. Max Vinogradov and Riley MacRae each scored twice.
