Police put call out for witnesses to crash

Chatham-Kent police are putting a call out for witnesses to last Sunday’s fatal crash involving a motorist and a Via Rail train.

Emergency crews responded to the crossing at Keil Drive in Chatham shortly after 2:30 p.m.

A 54-year-old Chatham woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

“Investigators are looking to speak with all motorists who were stopped at this railway crossing at the time of the collision,” police said on Friday.

Police said the preliminary investigation showed the vehicle was travelling south when it collided with the train.

The vehicle was pushed about 300 metres along the track before the train came to a stop.

The train, which was bound for Toronto, was nearing its stop at the Chatham Via Rail station when the crash occurred.

An email from Via Rail stated all passengers and crew members on board were safe after Train 76 struck the vehicle.

A spokesperson from Canadian National Railway confirmed the active warning devices of the crossing were functioning at the time of the incident.

Witnesses are asked to contact Const. Dan Carroll at dancar@chatham-kent.ca or call 519-355-1092.
