Committee calls for gov’t to expand jobs open to migrants

The Migration Advisory Committee’s new review recommends adding veterinarians, web designers and architects to the shortage occupation list

THE MIGRATION Advisory Committee (MAC) has called for the government to expand the shortage occupation list (SOL), opening up more skilled roles to workers from abroad.

If taken on board, the MAC’s recommendations will see the SOL account for nine per cent of jobs in the labour market, compared to one per cent under the previous list.

Veterinarians, web designers and architects are all among the occupations that the MAC said should be added to the SOL, which specifically covers workers coming from outside of Europe.
