Oldenburg: A German nurse believed to be the most prolific serial killer in the country’s post-war history was handed a life sentence for murdering 85 patients in his care. Judge Sebastian Buehrmann called Niels Hoegel’s killing spree is “incomprehensible” and acknowledged the trial left many families with painful unanswered questions. He murdered patients selected at random with lethal injections between 2000 and 2005, when he was caught in the act. Police suspect that Hoegel’s final death toll may be more than 200. AFP
Pashupatinath temple reveals assets for first time
Kathmandu: Nepal’s iconic Pashupatinath temple owns 9.276 kg gold, 316 kg silver and Rs 120 crore cash, according to a report made public for the first time by a committee formed to study the assets of the country’s most revered and the richest Hindu shrine. According to a probe panel formed by Pashupati Area Development Trust to inquire the income of the temple, the revenue in gold and silver cover the period of 56 years from 1962 to 2018. The 5th century Pashupatinath Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Kathmandu dating back to 400 AD. PTI
Shakira in Spanish court over alleged tax fraud
Esplugues De Llobregat: Colombian superstar Shakira went to court near Barcelona on Thursday to be questioned over the alleged evasion of 14.5 million euros ($16.3 million) in taxes. The 42-year-old singer avoided dozens of reporters, photographers and television cameras at the courthouse in Esplugues de Llobregat by entering via the garage. Prosecutors accuse her and one of her advisers of tax fraud after she allegedly failed to pay taxes in Spain despite being a resident between 2011 and 2014. AFP
