Washington: The US House of Representatives has voted to protect so-called “Dreamers” and establish a path to citizenship for more than 2 million immigrants who entered the country without authorisation or with only temporary status. The House on Tuesday voted 237-187 in favour of the Dream and Promise Act of 2019, as seven Republicans joined the Democrats in supporting the measure, the Hill magazine reported. The largest contingent of potential beneficiaries comprises the more than 7,00,000 undocumented youth who enjoy protection from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative, known as Dreamers. Nepal looks to limit Everest access after deaths
Kathmandu: Under pressure after a deadly season on traffic-clogged Mount Everest, Nepal is considering tightening access to the world’s highest peak, but mountaineering experts fear the proposed changes could amount to little more than lip service. Eleven persons died during the climbing season that ended this week, as record numbers lined the route to the summit. Although overcrowding was blamed for at least four deaths, many say inexperience is a bigger killer. For years, Kathmandu has issued permits to anyone willing to pay $11,000, regardless of whether they are rookie climbers or skilled mountaineers. AFP
A first: South Asian American woman chairs US House
Washington: Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington DC, has become the first South Asian American woman to preside over the US House of Representatives. Jayapal, who was first elected to the Congress in 2016, tweeted she was “beyond proud” to preside over the House and serve in the most diverse Congress in the nation’s history. The Indian American Congresswoman also shared a clip of Tuesday’s session where she was seen presiding over the House as a temporary Speaker. House Democrats rotate for the ceremonial position of presiding over the chamber. IANS
