Sklar Creative Visionary Award for Miyazaki

Los Angeles: Veteran Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki will be honoured with the 2019 Sklar Creative Visionary Award. The creator of iconic fantasy/mystery animation “Spirited Away”, Miyazaki will receive the award at this year’s annual Ryman Arts dinner and programme on October 25. Miyazaki will be the second recipient of the award after last year’s winner, Marvel Studio chief, Kevin Feige. The Tokyo-born director has an array of widely-acclaimed films to his credit, including “Howl’s Moving Castle, “Ponyo” and “The Wind Rises”, for which he received an Academy award nomination for best animated feature film in 2013. Satyarthi calls for UN meet to stop digital child abuse 

Singapore: Noble laureate Kailash Satyarthi has called for a UN convention to address the issue of digital child sexual abuse and trafficking. Satyarthi made the comments on Saturday during a conference, IIMPACT 2019, organised by PAN-IIM Alumni Singapore. IIMPACT is a forum created by the PAN-IIM (Indian Institutes of Management) alumni in Singapore. “What I am working on and demand (that) a legally binding UN Convention to stop digital abuse of children and child trafficking,” Satyarthi said. He was also in talks with the Indian government to lead in proposing a UN convention to stop the use of technology for child abuse. PTI

Coroner rules that Jeffrey Epstein hanged himself

New York: An autopsy on disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in his jail cell, has concluded that he committed suicide by hanging, a coroner said, answering one of the questions surrounding his death. The ruling comes six days after the 66-year-old, who was accused of trafficking girls as young as 14 for sex, was discovered dead in New York’s high-security Metropolitan Correctional Centre. The New York Times cited officials as saying that Epstein had used a bedsheet to hang himself. The report came a day after US media reported that preliminary findings from the post-mortem examination had found broken bones in Epstein’s neck. AFP 

UK PM Johnson may meet Macron ahead of G7

Paris: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson may hold talks on Brexit with French President Emmanuel Macron ahead of next week’s G7 summit, French diplomatic sources said on Saturday. Johnson will “probably” see Macron in Paris ahead of the August 24-26 Group of Seven summit in the southern French resort of Biarritz, one of the sources said without giving a date. A spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday that a meeting with Johnson in Berlin was “expected very soon”. The Johnson government says it is determined to take Britain out of the EU by October 31. AFP
