UK set to lift ban on liquids at airports with new 3-D tech

London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday unveiled plans for all major UK airports to introduce a ground-breaking 3D cabin baggage screening equipment in order to eventually phase out the ban on liquids above a 100-ml limit through security. This could mean in future passengers may be able to keep liquids and electrical equipment, like laptops and tablets, in their cabin baggage while it is screened. The Heathrow Airport is currently trial testing the new 3D equipment to be rolled out at other UK airports by December 2022. PTI

Indian mission in Dubai repatriates 100 distressed sailors  

Dubai: The Indian diplomatic mission here has said 100 distressed sailors were repatriated to India this year till end of July, according to a media report. Speaking to Khaleej Times, Consul-General of India in Dubai Vipul said the mission’s priority is to serve the most-distressed first. “Till July 31 this year, from the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) the consulate has provided air tickets to about 375 people. Special attention has been given to the welfare of every Indian abroad, especially those in distress,” Vipul said. PTI

Pakistan politician from Indian-origin Kutty dies  

Karachi: Prominent Indian-origin Pakistani politician and human rights activist BM Kutty died on Sunday in Karachi after a protracted illness. He was 89. Biyyothil Mohyuddin Kutty migrated to Pakistan from Kerala in 1949. “He was ill for a while. He spent his life fighting for civil and human rights,” Marvi Sarmad, a human rights activist and journalist, said. His wife Birjis Siddiqui died in 2010. The couple has four children. Kutty came to limelight after he launched his autobiography “Sixty years in self-exile: No Regrets; A Political Autobiography” in 2011. PTI
