In its third year, Golden Soca has continue to lure the youthful and the youth at heart.
Last Saturday, the Sea Rocks Dome was brimming with soca lovers and party goers, who bade their farewell to the sweetest festival of the year, Crop Over. The three-month festival might have climaxed on August 6 with the masquerade and revelry at Grand Kadooment, but for the hundreds packed in the Maxwell, Christ Church venue, Golden Soca was the grand finale that they all anticipated. It was the epitome of what Crop Over represented, good music and good times. It was a feting family as the young and the old drenched in sweat partied the night away during the five-hour show.
The line-up of featured performances of seasoned veterans transported the crowd back to the nineties and eighties. Artistes such as Cutloose, Duke Check Shirt, Malik, Speedy, Grynner and Bumba had the crowd chipping and dancing with their classical hits. Meanwhile, Jus D, Hollaback, Hypasounds, Shaquille and Peter Ram brought their youthful energy and vibes to ensure an outstanding show.
Cultural ambassadors Stedson Red Plastic Bag Wiltshire and Anthony Mighty Gabby Carter received a roaring response from the crowd when they came on stage. RPB had the audience in a frenzy from his first tune If Ya Sweet Ya Sweet. He enlivened the patrons with his 2015 winning single Spontaneous and 2017 Sweet Soca hit Boat Ride. It would not have been a surprise if a gust of blessings blew into the Dome during his performance of Alive as the patrons’ backup echoed throughout the building.
When the Mighty Gabby graced the stage, he sang the sombre and melodic single Emmerton. However, this did not damper the mood of the crowd who knew the famous tune by heart. It was a trip down memory lane as the lyrical genius went on to perform Hit It, Wind Force, Boots and Jack. His time on stage went by smoothly; before you knew it, his 15 minute set was over and you were left wanting more.
Another highlight performance came from the General himself, Edwin Yearwood. The crowd went insane for Yearwood from his first croon. He performed Sake Pase, Home Sweet Home, Ship Ahoy, Sweatin and Something Greater Than Me.
The 2018 Sweet Soca Monarch, Lil Rick closed off the show with his usual exuberant energy and dynamism. The Hypa Dawg sang tunes from Crop Over 2017 and 2018, which were beloved by the audience. These included Breakfast In Bed, Blessings, Mudda Sally and True Story.
During his performance of True Story, Rick spoke about the backlash he received for winning the Sweet Soca Monarch. He changed the lyrics of the popular tune saying, “I did want to win Sweet Soca every sinceee”, receiving cheers from the audience.
As the 11 p.m. finishing time approached, the crowd was screaming for more. Lil Rick fulfilled their wishes to drop his 1994 ‘bashment single’ Hard Wine and closed the show seven minutes later. (KK)
