The charity concert ‘From Inside the Circle’ was an outstanding showcase of Barbados’ vocal talents. Last Saturday, the inaugural event sponsored by Mount Gay Distilleries kicked off at the company’s headquarters on Spring Garden Highway with some of the island’s top musicians and entertainers taking to the stage in front of more than 300 persons.
The first artistes to perform were the Songwriter’s Circle which comprised cultural ambassador Dr Anthony Gabby Carter, Emile Straker and Indra. Gabby performed classics such as Bridgetown Market and Emmerton which were well received.
Meanwhile, Straker, the lead vocalist of The Merrymen, took the audience back in time with classics such as Beautiful Barbados and Big Bamboo. Barbadian singer-songwriter Indra, formerly known as Indrani, sang her self-penned songs including Shining Star.
New artistes Krisirie and Lennox captivated the crowd with their soothing duet. Lennox also engaged the audience with his single Liberation which spoke about the challenges that creatives faced.
The concert, which was filmed by a Canadian television production company, will be included in a new television series to be broadcast throughout the Caribbean on Flow TV.
The proceeds from the concert will go towards the Substance Abuse Foundation’s renewable energy initiative that funds rehabilitation and education programmes.
Chief Executive Officer of the Substance Abuse Foundation Marietta Carrington explained the surprising partnership between the Foundation and Mount Gay saying that the two entities wanted to support “a cause around safe or responsible drinking and driving”. She stressed that reactions to addiction could only be changed once persons were educated.
“Personally, I believe if we educate and inform and people are responsible, the need to police would be reduced or certainly be minimized,” Carrington stated. (KK)
