Deni Goure scored twice in the Chatham Maroons’ 6-4 comeback win over the St. Thomas Stars before 304 fans Sunday at Thames Campus Arena.

Goure’s second goal broke a 4-4 tie at 11:42 of the third period and Dawson Garcia added an empty-netter as the Maroons improved to 2-0-1 in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League pre-season.

Kaleb Thiessen, Zach Power and Cam Welch also scored for the Maroons, who trailed 4-3 late in the second period. Tate Bowden had two assists.

Maroons goalie Adam Harris made 33 saves. Kevin Linker and Zack Johnson of the Stars combined for 27.

The Maroons played their home exhibition opener with six veteran skaters in the lineup: Josh King, Eric Carter, Matt Murray, Thomas Michaud, Justin Badour and Garcia.

They’ll host the Leamington Flyers at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Thames Campus Arena and visit Leamington on Thursday.

Jackson Brown, Trevor Klee, Colton Wiacek and Russell Oldham scored for the Stars.

Blades fall to Stars

STRATHROY – The Blenheim Blades lost their pre-season opener 4-2 to the North Middlesex Stars on Saturday.

Linemates Chandler Glassford, Connor Wright and Spencer Chatel of the Blades combined for six points. Glassford and Wright each had a goal and an assist.

Sean McNally made 30 saves for the Blades, who dressed only two veterans.

They’ll continue the Provincial Junior Hockey League pre-season by hosting the Stars at 7 p.m. Sunday at Blenheim Memorial Arena.

Ex-Blades Kain Hopkins and Drew Vandehogen are on the Stars but didn’t play Saturday.

Sharks win in overtime

AMHERSTBURG – Braedon Zuidema scored 1:51 into overtime as the Wheatley Omstead Sharks beat the Amherstburg Admirals 4-3 in the PJHL pre-season Sunday.

Jace Leach scored twice for the Sharks, who trailed 3-1 midway through the third period. Braedon Caetano potted the tying goal with 29 seconds left.

Winning goalie Ben Simonas stopped 13 of 15 shots after replacing Tristan Edmondson, who stopped 19 of 20 shots.

The Sharks are off until Wednesday, Sept. 5, when the Blenheim Blades visit Wheatley.
