Assessment ordered on troubled teen

The Probation Department will over the next few weeks conduct an assessment into the life of a 16-year-old who has been walking around with a knife for his protection.

Miguel Cody Mayers, of Easy Hall, St Joseph, pleaded guilty to having the weapon, as well as a quantity of cannabis in his possession on August 26.

According to Station Sergeant Samuel Hinds a group of young men “scratched off” when they saw police on patrol along Bay Street, The City.

Lawmen gave chase and Mayers, in his bid to escape, scaled a motorcar and landed in a pile of galvanize, injuring his right leg.

During a subsequent search by police, the drugs and the knife were found on his person.

“Officer I just got a lil something to smoke to cool my head . . . . Officer I got that to defend myself on the streets,” Mayers allegedly told lawmen at the time.

Today, the first-time offender, whose leg was encased in gauze and walked with the aid of crutches, told Magistrate Douglas Frederick that he had been carrying around the knife following an incident at school.

“I get stab up so I decided to walk with my knife . . . to protect myself if I have to,” Mayers said.

The magistrate then asked him if he planned on stabbing someone with the weapon.

“If I have to . . . yes sir, if necessary . . . . If prefer to kill somebody than somebody kill me . . . . Last time I ran away I get stab up. I feel safe with my knife,” an unapologetic Mayers said in response.

Frederick then ordered a report on the teen and placed him on a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.

“He needs re-educating because he is not going to live long if he is walking around with a knife,” the magistrate said.

Mayers, who returns to court on October 26, was released on $2,000 bail.
