Skateboarding lovers can now breathe a sigh of relief as a highly anticipated Skate Park for their sport is slowly becoming a reality.
The announcement was yesterday made by the president of the Skateboarding Association of Barbados Paul Irie Wilson who said the multi-million dollar skatepark was being completed at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Wilson was speaking at the Barbados Olympic Association as the Skateboarding Association of Barbados in conjunction with the One Movement International Skate Competition presented awards to some of the 27 participants who competed in the international skateboarding competition.

“The good news is we have come to a point where we will have our first official skatepark. It is something that I have been dreaming of for some time. I am getting goose bumps,” he said, adding that the creation of the skate park was something that meant a lot to him.
Wilson reflected on the first time he learned how to skateboard.
“From the time I stepped on a skateboard my life changed and I wanted that for the future generations of Barbados. I dedicated everything in my power, in my knees, in my bones to make this happen and it is coming to pass,” he said.
The skatepark which received its official groundbreaking ceremony in March by the then Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth Stephen Lashley was set to be completed in 34 weeks. However, Paul stated that five months later workmen were now on the second day of the job attempting to get the skate park in motion.
“It is the second day that we have been working on the site,” a visibly happy Wilson said.
The One Movement International Skate Competition which is in its 9th year attracted 27 competitors from St Lucia and Barbados who showcased their skateboarding skills to win the coveted prize. The junior and senior skateboarders received their prizes from sponsors TDC and the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.
