Court ‘no-show’ gets jail

His failure to appear in court for over a year has cost a St Michael man his freedom today – at least temporarily.

John Maxwell, of Paradise Road, Spooners Hill has two traffic charges dating back to February 2016 pending before the District ‘A’ Traffic Court.

However, prosecutor Acting Station Sergeant Cameron Gibbons informed Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that a warrant had been issued for Maxwell’s arrest as his last appearance in court was in December 2016.

“I went to the wrong court on that date in 2016. I called after that and spoke to a clerk who said she did not see my name on the list and that was the end of that. I didn’t know where to go. I can’t remember what the case was because that was ever since,” Maxwell said to which Cuffy-Sargeant asked whether he had made it his business to find out what other courts were operating on the island.

Maxwell, who returns before the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on September 10, said he had not.
