Kings fall to Flags
DRESDEN – The Dresden Kings’ perfect preseason ended Friday with a 5-1 loss to the Mooretown Flags in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.
Cory Lucier of the Kings (2-1-0-0) opened the scoring midway through the first period before 207 fans at Lambton-Kent Memorial Arena.
Kings goalie Cody Hitchcock stopped 27 shots.
Cam Rannie scored twice for the Flags (4-1-0-0), who led 2-1 after one period and 4-1 after two. Garret Miller, Brett Farr and Matt Sawatzky added singles.
The teams will end the preseason with a rematch Saturday in Mooretown at 7:30 p.m.
Admirals down Sharks
WHEATLEY – The Amherstburg Admirals scored four unanswered goals in a 5-2 win over the Wheatley Omstead Sharks in the PJHL preseason Friday.
The Sharks led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Colton Candido and Joran Paquette in front of 250 fans at Wheatley Area Arena.
Sharks starting goalie Catalin Morin stopped 23 of 26 shots. Ben Simonas came in midway through the second period and stopped 14 of 16.
Cory Burns, Broden Meloche, Josh Talerico, Josh Jacobs and Mitchell Demelo scored for the Admirals.
The Sharks (2-1-0-0) will visit the Blades in the preseason finale at 7 p.m. Sunday at Blenheim Memorial Arena.
Carleton, Canada win exhibition
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Bridget Carleton of Chatham had three points and one rebound for Canada’s senior women’s basketball team in a 76-69 win over Japan in the opener of a two-game exhibition series Friday.
Carleton hit her only shot from the field while playing eight minutes. Her triple with four seconds left in the third quarter gave Canada a 62-49 lead.
Chatham-born Miranda Ayim, who grew up in London, scored 15 points. She was honoured before the game for playing her 150th game with Team Canada.
Natalie Achonwa had a double-double for Canada with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
“It was just great to be on the floor with our final 12 (players) as we’re heading into the World Cup,” Ayim said in a statement. “It’s nice to get that rhythm back. There’s more to be found in that rhythm going forward, but I think it was a good first game and we saw what we need to work on. Japan is always a great opponent to play as they really push the tempo and they hit threes.”
Canada ends the series Saturday night against the United States.
Canada is preparing for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup to be held Sept. 22-30 in Tenerife, Spain.
Its pre-tournament schedule includes a tournament against France, the United States and Senegal on Sept. 15-17 in Antibes, France.
Mini Mods’ championship
South Buxton Raceway will hold its championship race for the Mini Mods on Saturday.
The three other classes – Late Models, Modifieds and Thunderstocks – will also be in action. The green flag waves at 6:30 p.m.
The Late Models and Modifieds will have their championship races Saturday, Sept. 15.
Steve Shaw won the Thunderstocks’ championship race Sept. 1.
The season ends with the annual Joey Atkinson Memorial Canadian Fall Shootout on Sept. 28-29.
Youth soccer finals
The Chatham Youth Soccer Association will hold its day of champions Saturday at Chatham Christian School and the Keil Drive fields.
The boys’ finals are: Chatham Burgers vs. Moose Lodge (U17), 9:30 a.m.; Eco Insulation vs. Canadian Tire (U14), 10:15 a.m.; and Chatham Plumbing vs. Devco Masonry (U12), 11 a.m.
The girls’ finals are: Renaissance Personnel vs. Storey Auto (U17), 11:30 a.m.; BMO vs. Bondy (U14), 12:15 p.m.; and Go Wire vs. Peach Physiotherapy (U12), 1 p.m.
