Between a rock and jail time

Five cocaine rocks contained in a cellular phone and a bottle outfitted to smoke the drug sent a 61-year-old man straight to HMP Dodds for six months.

Shirlon McDonald Dowell, of Bedford Land, Greenfield, St Michael, was found with the illegal drug and the apparatus yesterday. They were concealed under the stool on which he was sitting in a shed in his community.

“I use [that] to smoke . . . I was [going] and smoke them,” he allegedly told police who were on patrol in the area at the time.

After admitting to the charges before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant this afternoon Dowell pleaded for leniency in sentencing.

“I am begging the court for leniency . . . I have a little job that I want to keep because I want to help my family, and myself” said Dowell who is known to the court.

However, his plea went up in smoke as he was given six months for possession of the apparatus and was convicted, reprimanded and discharged for possession of the drug.
