TRIBUTE - Written by Dr Anthony ‘Gabby’ Carter
He pleasured us with ‘Bass Man’,
A sweet musical fit,
Then thrill us all so dearly
Singing hit after hit.
No one could phrase like Shadow
Or make you want to dance,
His music’s simply unique.
He took a very firm stance
In making sure he never copied
No one that you know,
Not de great Lord Kitchener,
Not even Sparrow.
I could see him right now
Standing in front the mike
In his black attire
Looking outta sight.
Talk about stage presence,
Shadow had it all.
Without moving one muscle
He’ll make the audience ball.
Hook line after hook line
With a sweet refrain,
It cannot be disputed
He had a brilliant brain.
Sometimes he’ll just vocal
What comes to his mind
Nothing recognizable
To the human kind.
Yet so much emotion
He would exhibit.
He would make the audience
Go crazy for it.
Listen to his horn lines
Sharp and crisp and sweet.
When the Shadow is singing
All man lift their feet.
Christened Winston Bailey,
I would have you know
He first graced us with his mastery
In nineteen seventy four.
Some who heard this genius
Thought it was a fluke.
But not Kitch and Sparrow
Crazy
Baron nor Duke.
They knew that a unique style
To calypso was born.
Stalin
Rudder and Machel
All admire this man.
Every musician like Roy Cape,
Every single steel band.
I always called him Winston,
He was a brother to me.
‘Gabby’ he would say
‘Before ya go
Make sure ya get ya money’.
Because on many occasions
(Those promoters should repent.)
Shadow would sing,
De place would ring,
But he got not one cent!
Travel on MR.BASSMAN
Your music on earth will reign.
Rest well on that Heavenly Train,
Until I see you again.
