The one hundred million dollars initially put aside by Government for repairs is starting to look like a mere drop in the bucket according to Minister of Transport, William Duguid.
Government’s road rehabilitation project continued with a tour of St Philip and after seeing the condition of just a small portion of the parish, Duguid revealed the initial budget allotted to the country’s roads may now have to be doubled.
“As you know, the Prime Minister is saying all the time that we have a hundred million dollars to spend in road construction. I really think it’s going to end up being maybe two hundred million when we look at the state of the roads we have now; but that is all part of bringing back growth to the country.”
Duguid also appealed for more contractors to tender their services for the country’s road repair projects. He promised that no single contractor would be allowed to get all of the work given the magnitude of the current problems.
“It makes more sense to have five contractors working simultaneously because they have five pieces of equipment, five sets of employees, so everybody working rather than waiting on one contractor to finish one road, then to move to another road, then a third road, It prolongs it. So I like the idea of all the contractors getting a chance, so that everybody is out there and putting Barbados back to work again,” he said
In addition to a tremendous amount of money, Minister Duguid highlighted the need for his technical staff at the ministry to sit down and comprehensively determine how best to tackle the mammoth task before them.
According to the 54-year-old parliamentary representative for the area, John King, who was part of the tour, many of the roads in his constituency have not been fixed from the time he was a child.
“It’s important at this juncture, not only for me as a politician, but for the country as a whole, that things which have been left unattended for years, we come in and do the work that is necessary to give people some sort of comfort,” he said.
The team from the Ministry of Transport and proceeded to St Phillip North and St Phillip South to meet with parliamentary representatives Dr. Sonia Brown and Indar Weir respectively, in an effort to continue the thorough process of surveying the country’s roads.
