$300 in one week or jail

A 33-year-old man has one week to pay the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court a $300 fine.

The sentence was imposed on Damien Ricardo Wharton of No 34 Husbands Terrace, St James when he appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick recently.

Police were conducting vehicle spot checks on October 26 on Baxters Road when they stopped Wharton. A search was conducted and illegal drugs were found to which he admitted ownership.

Queen’s Counsel Michael Lashley in mitigating on Wharton’s behalf urged the court to show his client leniency on the grounds that he had not been before the court for some time.

The magistrate then imposed the fine, which carries a three months prison sentence if left unpaid.

“Stop with the drugs,” Frederick advised Wharton before he left the dock.
