Claiming she was “advised to do so” a young woman yesterday pleaded guilty in the District ‘C’ Magistrate Court to committing three acts of money laundering.
As a result, Stephanie Marie Andrea Benn, 27, of #87 Vauxhall Gardens, Christ Church, had her bail revoked by Chief Magistrate Christopher Birch. She was remanded to HMP Dodds until December 11 when she will return for sentencing.
Benn had initially pleaded not guilty to engaging in money laundering, where she processed money totaling $762, which were the proceeds of crime.
She had also been charged with purchasing a cellphone valued $549 using the proceeds of crime. Additionally, Benn was also charged with purchasing a watch, fridge and stove, total value $3295.29, the proceeds of crime. Benn had been granted bail on all three charges, but when she reappeared in court on Tuesday, she told Birch she had been advised to change her plea and to plead guilty.
In giving the facts, prosecutor Station Sergeant Peter Barrow said that during a robbery, a quantity of money was taken. Investigations were carried out which led to the accused and she was interviewed and she gave a written statement outlining her involvement in the matters. During the investigations a fridge and stove which she purchased from Massy with the proceeds were recovered, as well as a Michael Kors watch which was bought from Cave Shepherd.
