For committing six traffic offences a St Michael youth was forced to part with $1,000 today.
The fine was handed down to 23-year-old tree trimmer Raheem Akeem Grimes of Chadderton Road, Carrington Village by Magistrate Graveney Bannister when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court. Grimes pleaded guilty to driving without a valid driver’s licence, driving through a road which carried a No Entry sign, driving without insurance, driving without due care and attention, driving without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road, and giving police constable Troy Jordan a false name and address.
When asked by the magistrate what drove him to unnecessarily break the law, the young man who had no previous convictions gave several excuses. As it related to driving through the No Entry sign, he said he was unable to see it as “the sign was short”. And while admitting that he did not have a valid licence he revealed that he had possessed a learner’s permit for a year.
The magistrate fined him $400 forthwith or 40 days in prison for driving through the No Entry sign; $500 forthwith or 50 days in prison for driving without a licence and $100 forthwith or 10 days in prison for driving without reasonable consideration. Magistrate Bannister convicted, reprimanded and discharged him on the charges of giving the officer false information as well as driving without insurance, while the charge of driving without due care and attention was dismissed. The fines were paid.
