A 34-year-old electrician found in possession of a food processor and a rice cooker containing $8,000 worth of marijuana has six months to pay a $5,500 fine if he wants to avoid spending the same amount of time at HMP Dodds.
The amount was imposed on Chad Lee Lashley, of Ellerton, St George today in the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court after he pleaded guilty to possession, possession with intent to supply and possession with intent to traffic two pounds of cannabis.
Station Sergeant Carrison Henry said police acting on information went on duty to Cheapside in the City on November 13 where they saw Lashley with a box. He was approached and subsequently detained and taken to the Oistins Police Station where a search was conducted.
In the food processor police discovered five black packages and eight packages in the rice cooker wrapped in carbon, in vacuumed sealed bags, all containing the illicit vegetable matter.
In mitigating for leniency for his client attorney-at-law Mohia Ma’at told acting Magistrate Sandra Rollins that his client was a father of five who was holding down two jobs – that of electrician and mechanic – to provide for his family.
He said that although Lashley was known to the court this was the first time that he had been charged and convicted for drugs.
“It was a one-off thing and he is sorry for the act. The quantum is unfortunate . . . . but he has not wasted any time as he came to the dock and said ‘I did it, it is my fault,” the lawyer said as he asked the court to consider a discounted fine given his client’s early guilty plea and other mitigating factors.
For the charge of trafficking a $4,500 fine was imposed which must be paid in six months or Lashley will face the alternative of six months in prison. For the supply charge he was fined $1,000 also in six months or an alternative sentence of three months in prison.
“Thank for you mercy ma’am,” Lashley said. He was ordered to pay the amounts by May 14, 2019.
