Psychiatric check for teen

Seventeen-year-old Jamal Ramon Anderson Hackett, of Thompson Gap, Black Rock, St Michael who allegedly wounded a 16-year-old schoolboy has been transferred from HMP Dodds to the Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation.

Acting Magistrate Sandra Rollins remanded the accused to the Black Rock, St Michael mental health facility until December 5 following lengthy submissions from his attorney-at-law Kashka Hemans in the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court today.

Back in October Hackett pleaded not guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Stephan Hoyte on October 9 but guilty to stealing an $800 cellular phone belonging to Hoyte as well as robbing Kashone Joseph of $30 on September 17.

He has been on remand since his first appearance on October 17.

“At present this young man is being held at HMP [Dodds] . . . it is no place [that is] in the best interest of a young man of such and impressionable age,” Hemans argued.

However, Station Sergeant Carrison Henry again renewed the prosecution’s objection to bail saying that Hoyte, the complainant, had been re-admitted to hospital this morning for the same injury and there was a strong possibility that “he may have to go back to surgery”.

Given the circumstances the acting magistrate said she could not grant bail at this time.

Following further submissions, Hemans put in a submission for his client to get an evaluation by doctors at the hospital.
