Konecny stars for Flyers
PHILADELPHIA – Travis Konecny of Clachan was the first star with a goal, two assists and a fight in the Philadelphia Flyers’ 4-0 win over the New York Rangers on Friday.
He scored the winning goal in the first period, fought in the second and assisted on two of the Flyers’ three goals in the third.
Konecny has six goals and eight assists in 22 games. He has six points in his last three games.
The Flyers will visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Kings lose in overtime
LAKESHORE – The Dresden Kings lost to the Lakeshore Canadiens 4-3 in overtime Friday in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.
Nathan Skulley of the Canadiens scored 31 seconds into sudden-death.
The Kings forced overtime on Cory Lucier’s goal with 1:14 left in the third period. Goalie Brett Brochu was on the bench for an extra skater.
Nolan VandenBoorn and Brantly Kuipers also scored tying goals for the Kings (17-3-0-2), who regained sole possession of first place in the Stobbs Division.
Brochu made 25 saves. Canadiens goalie Nolan Hakr of Chatham made 19.
Skulley had two goals for the third-place Canadiens (13-4-1-2), who held three one-goal leads. Blake Bain and Dylan Bradley also scored.
Tartans reach semifinals
LONDON – The No. 1-seeded Wallaceburg Tartans will play for a medal Saturday at the OFSAA ‘AA’ girls’ basketball championship.
The Tartans will tip off against No. 5 London Mother Teresa in a semifinal at 10:30 a.m. at Mother Teresa.
The winner goes to the gold-medal game against either No. 2 Dundas Valley or No. 6 Hamilton St. Mary at 5:30 p.m. at John Paul II. The loser plays for bronze at 4 p.m. at John Paul II.
The Tartans rallied in the second half to beat No. 8 Timmins Theriault 68-47 in a quarter-final Friday night.
Wallaceburg led 12-9 after one quarter, but Theriault was up 26-25 at halftime. Wallaceburg ended the third quarter on a 12-5 run for a 43-34 lead, then continued pulling away in the fourth.
Tartans leading scorer Keahna Riley also won their pride, hustle and determination award for the game.
The Tartans beat No. 16 Newmarket Denison 63-8 in the second round earlier Friday. They didn’t allow any points in the second and third quarters.
The Tartans led 13-5, 28-5 and 47-5 at the quarters. Ferrah Blackbird won their pride, hustle and determination award.
Hawks out in quarters
WINDSOR – The No. 7-seeded Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks were swept by No. 2 Mississauga in a quarter-final at the OFSAA ‘AAA’ boys’ volleyball championship Friday.
Mississauga won 25-22, 25-19, 25-16.
The Golden Hawks placed second in their pool with a 3-1 record behind No. 4 London Lucas (4-0).
The Hawks ended pool play Friday by beating No. 17 Ottawa Earl of March 20-25, 25-21, 15-13.
Flames miss playoffs
BELLEVILLE – The Chatham Christian Flames missed the playoffs by going 0-4 in their pool at the OFSAA ‘A’ boys’ volleyball championship.
The No. 13-seeded Flames lost to No. 17 Bancroft North Hastings 25-21, 25-18 and to No. 10 Kanata Maurice-Lapointe 25-16, 25-16 on Friday.
They also lost to No. 4 Brockville St. Mary 25-13, 25-19 in Thursday’s late match.
