Rockets deal Maroons second straight loss

The Chatham Maroons were shut out until the final second in a 3-1 loss to the Strathroy Rockets on Saturday.

Nolan Gardiner scored for the Maroons at 19:59 of the third period in front of 439 fans at West Middlesex Memorial Arena in Strathroy.

The third-place Maroons (12-6-0-2) have lost two straight games and four of five in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference.

They outshot the Rockets 46-39.

“Tonight’s loss is different than the ones we have had recently,” Maroons head coach Kyle Makaric said on the team’s Facebook page. “Our guys worked hard, they threw everything at the net and couldn’t buy a goal. I feel for our guys as they played the way any coach can ask and didn’t come away with the result.”

The Rockets scored three goals in a span of 3:38 early in the second period.

Emmet Pierce broke the scoreless tie on a power play at 2:35, Ryan Warner followed at 5:06 and Daniel Aspro added a short-handed goal at 6:13.

Maroons starting goalie Tristan Lewis was pulled after the third goal. He stopped 10 of 13 shots.

Adam Harris came in to stop all 26 shots he faced.

Rockets goalie Vince Michelizzi made 45 saves.

The Rockets (9-13-0-0) moved into a seventh-place tie with their third straight win and sixth in eight games. They’ve beaten the conference’s top three teams (London, Leamington and Chatham) during that eight-game stretch.

The Maroons will host the St. Thomas Stars at 7 p.m. Sunday at Chatham Memorial Arena.
