New Scotland Line culvert work delayed

Wet weather is delaying when work on the next phase of the New Scotland Line culvert repair will begin.

Originally scheduled to begin this past Monday, work will not start on the culvert replacement until Nov. 26, stated a media release issued Wednesday.

A 3.68 kilometre section of the road has been closed since May 5 when the culvert beneath the road failed.

An engineering report was completed and council approved the $422,000 contract to South Shore Contracting of Essex in September. The contact was 16 per cent below the engineer’s estimate.

The next phase involves removal of the failed culvert followed immediately by installation of the new pre-cast culvert, stated the media release.

Once that takes place, the road will have a temporary gravel surface at the culvert until next spring when weather will permit laying an asphalt surface.
