Chatham-Kent police have arrested one of two suspects wanted in connection to the theft of a Remembrance Day poppy box containing donated money.
Police previously reported a man and woman entered the McDonald’s restaurant in Wallaceburg shortly after 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 and stole the poppy donation box.
Through investigation, both suspects were identified.
Police said a 24-year-old male accused, of no fixed address, was located Sunday night and arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.
The accused was also arrested on outstanding warrants for shoplifting from Walmart, failing to attend for his fingerprints and failing to attend court.
Police continue to look for a 33-year-old woman of no fixed address.
Pedestrian struck
A 53-year-old woman being struck vehicle in Chatham early Monday morning was soon followed by a collision between a school bus and vehicle that also hit a Chatham-Kent police cruiser with an officer inside.
Police said the pedestrian suffered minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle while crossing at the intersection of Richmond Street and Lacroix Street around 6:20 a.m. Monday.
No charges were laid, police said.
An officer on scene assisting with the investigation, parked his cruiser behind the first officer on scene, police said.
At this time, police said a car travelling westbound on Richmond Street struck a school bus turning north onto Lacroix Street.
The impact of that collision resulted in the woman’s car hitting the parked cruiser as the officer was sitting in it, police said.
There were no students on the bus at the time of the collision and the 43-year-old driver of the car was taken to hospital as a precaution. The crash remains under investigation.
The officer was not injured and total damage estimated at $18,000, police said.
Escape lawful custody
A 35-year-old Chatham man is facing charges in connection to a domestic incident Sunday morning.
Chatham-Kent police said a verbal argument began between the accused and his girlfriend while at their apartment, which escalated into a physical altercation.
The accused fled as he was placed under arrest and the officer tried to handcuff him. He was taken into custody a short distance away and transported to police headquarters, police said.
The accused has been charged with assault and escape lawful custody. He was placed in custody pending a bail hearing, police said.
Two incidents at Walmart
Chatham-Kent police were called to the Chatham Walmart store twice Sunday to deal with a shoplifting incident and a fraud matter.
A 25-year-old Chatham man was arrested late Sunday afternoon after police responded to a shoplifting complaint at the store.
Police said the accused has been charged with theft and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Police returned to the store around 8 p.m. to respond to a fraud complaint in connection to a 28-year-old Harwich Township man accused of taking an item off the shelf and trying to return it for cash using a found receipt.
Police said both men were released with a Dec. 18 court date.
Public intoxication
A 38-year-old woman is facing a charge of being intoxicated in a public place after Chatham-Kent responded to a report of a drunken woman refusing to leave a business in Chatham just before 11 p.m. Sunday.
Police said the woman was taken into custody for her own safety and released Monday morning when sober.

RIDE spot check
Chatham-Kent continues to ramp up its RIDE spot check program.
Approximately 250 vehicles were stopped and checked Friday night in Wallaceburg with no roadside tests being conducted.
However, police said two motorists were issued tickets for driving with expired validation tags.
Police want to remind motorists that RIDE spot checks will increase through the holiday season in an effort to keep local roads safe.
If a citizen believes someone is driving while impaired, police ask them to call 911, because you could be saving someone’s life.
Police ask if people are enjoying festive beverages to plan for a safe ride home. This could include using a designated driver, calling a cab or staying overnight.
