Residents urged to help Barbados become carbon neutral

Barbadians are being urged to lend a hand as the island’s aspires to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Minister of Energy and Water Resources Wildfred Abrahams made the call during his opening remarks at  Energy Expo at Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

The expo, an initiative of CARICOM energy month, is being executed under the Disaster Risk and Energy Access Management Project, supported by the United Nations Development Programme.

The theme for the expo is: Road to 100 per cent renewable energy: generating growth, synergies and resilience.

Abrahams said that Barbados is aiming to for “energy independence, resilience and self-sufficiency” by 2030, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Minister of Energy said he envisioned a future Barbados operating on local renewable energy systems and facilitating transportation through electrical means.

He stressed that a carbon neutral island-state would be reliant on Barbados not depending on the innovations of others but on local innovators and scientists leading the journey.

“It is not enough for us to build on what other people have developed, it is not enough for us to look to other people to innovate . . . what we need to push in Barbados is the I believe attitude. We need to buy into the dream of 2030 and 100 per cent renewable energy for Barbados,” the minister said.

Abrahams also urged entrepreneurs to have dialogue with Government and ask for assistance when necessary.

“Do not hesitate to ask for what it is that you need, we might not be able to give it to you or we might not be able to give you everything that you want but unless you ask for it and let your desires and wants me known to us, then we will not know what it is you are missing,” he added.
