Barbados is making strides towards becoming fully powered but renewable energy and Williams Industries is leading the way.
“We are saving the island from having to export foreign exchange and we are saving the CO2 going into the atmosphere," Chairman of Williams Industries, Ralph Bizzy Williams said.
He was speaking at the Energy Expo hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
Williams said that his company started working with photovoltaic 35 years ago with the first chartered catamaran, and within the last five years has been working towards complete energy self-sufficiency.
With Williams Industries being the first company on the island to be carbon neutral, the chairman urged the rest of the private sector to come on aboard as the island seeks to fulfill the sustainable development goal of 100 per cent renewable energy and a carbon neutral state by 2030.
“I definitely do not want to be the one man out. We are importing the photovoltaic panels and equipment in bulk and retailing them at very low mark ups to small entrepreneurs to enable them to be able to equip homes all over the island,” Williams said.
“I would like to see 20,000 or 30,000 homes being self-sufficient in energy within the next year or two,” he added.
