Head coach Janine Day knew from Day 1 the Wallaceburg Tartans would be a good team this season.
The question was, how good?
The Tartans proved to be the best when they won the OFSAA ‘AA’ girls’ basketball championship Saturday in London.
The No. 1-seeded Tartans held off the No. 2 Dundas Valley Gryphons 53-52 in the gold-medal game.
The OFSAA championship is the first for Wallaceburg District Secondary School since the girls’ volleyball team won ‘AA’ gold in 1995.
The Tartans finished with a 32-5 record by going 5-0 at the tournament. They lost to only one ‘AA’ team all season.
They trailed 15-14 after the first quarter in the gold-medal game, but they rallied for a 29-25 halftime lead. They were up 36-34 entering the fourth.
The Gryphons drew even at 42-42 with 5:10 left, but the Tartans came back for the win.
The Tartans beat the No. 5 Mother Teresa Spartans 46-28 in a semifinal earlier Saturday in the Spartans’ own gym.
The Tartans led 13-2, 22-10 and 31-19 at the quarters.
