UPP knocks BWA

The United Progressive Party (UPP) has criticized the BWA following recent reports that the authority has proceeded with its plan to disconnect Barbadians from their water supply as a penalty for the non-payment of the Garbage and Sewage Collection tax.

In a statement on Sunday, the UPP said as expected, the poorest people with the prospect of having no water, a human right, would comply.

"They do not have the power to resist. And within this climate where one dare not criticize the Government for fear of losing one's livelihood, Barbadians are afraid to speak far less act," the UPP statement reads.

"What the BWA has admitted is that it has gone after the poor and most vulnerable first."

The UPP said the BWA is notorious for disconnecting the water of poor Barbadians while allowing the water bills of the wealthy to run into millions.

According to the UPP, a more efficient means of introducing the new Solid Waste Tax would have been to exempt the most vulnerable which would usually be those with the lower water consumption; and require those with the highest
water consumption to pay a slightly higher tax per day.
