Despite the hiccups that occurred during the night, the tenth year of Hennessy Artistry at the Kensington Oval was a memorable one.
As the event approached its final performance of the night, FAS7STAR dropped a bombshell.
Buju Banton will be performing in Barbados April 6, 2019 at the Kensington Oval.
The shocking announcement was met with roaring shouts from the audience as the popular reggae artiste was imprisoned for ten years for conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine, drug trafficking and a gun charge. He is slated to be released on December 8.
This news further exhilarated the audience which was enjoying the first performance of 2 Mile Hill, the sole Barbadian act of the night which did us proud with a stellar opening performance of their originals such as Conversation and Get Over.
Roots, rock, reggae artiste Luciano came on the stage around 10:30 p.m. He was a good warm up for the audience that accumulated after 11 p.m. He sang reggae classics such as Give Praise Rastafari, The Prophet Rise Again, This One Is For The Leaders, It’s Me Again Jah and Build A Better World which the crowd sang in unison.
During his performance, Luciano pulled out a Bible and started to read the scripture, blessing those gathered. He also prayed for peace and for the future generations, much to the shock of those in attendance. He also called for an end to the violence while referring to those in Jamaica who were living in poverty and resorted to gangs and guns to survive.
When Luciano’s set closed at 11:22 p.m., the crowd had grown substantially and the Kensington Oval was brimming with emotions of peace and love.
Jamaican artiste, Romain Virgo, performed for the couples last Saturday night singing several covers such as When A Woman Loves which received a hearty response from the audience, Stay With Me and Don’t You Remember. He also received originals such as Who Feels It Knows It, Taking You Home and Rich In Love which were crowd favourites.
The isolated showers of blessing did not damper the mood, especially when international headlining act, Trey Songz came on the stage.
There was a mad rush by patrons who were at the bars and food booths to get a front row views as Trigga suddenly attacked the stage with Heart Attack. His 50-minute performance was filled with shrieking screams from his female fans who sang his singles Na Na, Can’t Help But Wait and I Invented Sex. When Trigga took off his shirt to reveal his glistening six pack and upper body tattoos, the females were in a frenzy. From start to finish, this performance was for the ladies as he sang Dive In, Neighbours Know My Name and closed around 2 a.m. with the high energy performance of Bottoms Up.
Another one of the highly anticipated performers of the night was dance hall artiste Shabba Ranks, but his performance ended on a surprising and sour note. The Jamaican artiste took the audience back with his older singles such as Telephone Love, Mr Loverman, Twice My Age and Trailer Load of Girls. However, during his performance of Trailer Load of Girls, his performance was cut after the opening lines and he was called off the stage. Shabba subsequently dropped the mic leaving many patrons with quizzical expressions and wondering what was going on. Not leaving the awkwardness to linger, within minutes the organizers introduced the closing act, Unruly Boss himself, Popcaan.
Popcaan is no stranger to the Hennessy Artistry stage having performed in 2015 and headlining Hennessy on the Beach in 2017. He was embraced by the audience as he opened with his old tunes like Party Shot, Sober, Dream, True Friend, Jah Knows and the crowd favourite, Fall In Love. The enthusiasm of the ladies was evident as several in the VIP section attempted to grab him during his performance with one female patron falling at one point as they fought for the towel he threw into the audience. There were pure vibes during his set, with everyone enjoying themselves and having a good time as he performed his 2018 hit Silence from his sophomore album Forever, and Bullet Proof/Nuh Carry Feelings. Due to the show not falling behind schedule, Popcaan’s original 50-minute set was shortened to 30 minutes, with him closing the show after 4 a.m.
