Pirate’s Cove was a melting pot last Sunday as the third edition of Hennessy Artistry on the Beach took place at the popular party spot Daiquiri Beach. Hundreds of eager patrons descended on the sandy venue and were ready to be wooed by reggae and dancehall hits of yesteryear and present day.
Kicking off the event were DJs Energy Squad, Ramon G, Hutchy and Sizz, Mali Fresh and Scott Leroc who set the stage as the crowd began to build just after 6 p.m. from a 4 p.m. start time.
Jus D, Mole and Stiffy hit the stage around 8 p.m. and worked the onlookers into a groove as they got serenaded by the hits each artist was known for. Jus D and Mole had no new selections to share. However, Stiffy did bring a new release Warm Up which gained a modest reception from the crowd.
Jamaican DJs Third Generation had a great set during the night; their mix of old hits and the newer generation of songs whipped the crowd into a full on jamming mood. Riggo Suave as always delivered a hype-filled performance on the stage, with 2016 Redbull Thre3style winner DJ Puffy pumping up the crowd as the night progressed.
Rykin King performed for the first time in Barbados during the event, and despite a nice response to his regional hit Tuff, his performance did not impress the majority of the onlookers as some seemed to zone out during the act.
The above performers were merely setting the stage however, as the Dancehall Queen herself, Spice, took to the stage and was unapologetic with her act. She brought the energy and fire to the crowd who had been shouting her name all night as they waited with bated breath for her arrival. The Queen, however, was more than ready for her fans.
While onstage, she dropped one of her hits, Sheet, which was the catalyst to a dance off competition right on stage.
It was truly ‘lit.’
Even in the mist of her electric performance, Spice took a brief moment to address the crowd about a viral photo she had posted a few weeks prior.
“… I posted a picture a few weeks ago on my social media where persons thought I had bleached my skin. The reason I did that is because I wanted to raise awareness for the black women.”
She then briefly performed the song of the referenced photo, Black Hypocrisy. The song speaks about colorism in the black community and how it affects young people’s self-esteem and strongly pressures them into skin-bleaching. Spice also made sure to drop many of her earlier hits such as Fight Over Man, Romping Shop and Jim Screechy; the latter proved to be a huge crowd favourite.
Cham, formerly known as Baby Cham closed off the night with his classics such as Back Way and Start It.
Cham also delighted the crowd when he, to the surprise of the patrons, brought on Popcaan who finished off the night with a great showing for the crowd.
