Public input to be sought on twin-pad arena

Public input will be sought in the new year as council looks into the feasibility of investing in a twin-pad arena.

Staff presented a report on Monday recommending that engagement sessions be scheduled. The exact dates are still to be determined but would be held in February and April.

Following the second session, a report will be developed for council summarizing the comments. This is expected to be presented in June.

This past May, council directed staff to look into the issue to develop plans and provide a site analysis to the new council, which was sworn in earlier this month.

“Infrastructure and Engineering Services has received significant feedback from the public as to the need and long-term viability of a twin-pad arena,” stated Monday’s report.

“Comments have ranged from strong support of a twin-pad arena to those requesting consideration for alternative solutions and cost minimization.”

Jeff Bray, Chatham-Kent’s manager of parks, open spaces and recreational facilities, said he also hopes there will be an advisory committee of user groups to help provide suggestions.

C-K open to potential cannabis store

Council gave the go-ahead to allow a potential cannabis retail store in Chatham-Kent.

However, whether or not a store actually materializes is another matter, said Bruce McAllister, director of planning. He added government is only planning for 25 stores in the province initially, due to supply shortages.

Chatham Coun. Doug Sulman entered a notice of motion asking that the municipality lobby the province for regulatory powers concerning location, in particular to ensure they’re away from schools and churches.

Wallaceburg arena upgrades

Council approved a $1.87-million tender for renovations to the Wallaceburg Memorial Arena.

Aveiro Constructors Ltd. will perform the work, which will include installation of an accessible washroom; elevator to the mezzanine; re-design of the front lobby/canteen/office area; expanded accessible viewing; addition of three dressing rooms and a referee’s room.

Also included in the tender were upgrades to existing dressing rooms, washrooms and referee’s room.
