Spreading the Christmas cheer

The Barbados Geriatric Hospital officially started its Christmas celebrations for 2018, and brought in some special guests to share in the festivities.

Governor General Dame Sandra Mason along with Minister of Health and Wellness Jeffrey Bostic and Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Kenneth George, were among those on hand to spend quality time with the patients and enjoy music and poetry from patients and staff at the Beckles Road facility.

Marguerite Bourne-Clarke, who acted as host for the event, said the ongoing renovation work at the hospital had “lifted the spirits” of everyone, while Infection Control Officer, Alvin Hart, who gave the vote of thanks, commended the Barbados Defence Force for their contribution to the upkeep of the facility.

Some of the performers included 73-year-old Gloria Payne, one of the residents, and day care patient Gloria Maughan, both of whom recited self-penned poems, while nurse Christine Broomes performed clear renditions of O Holy Night and Silent Night.

Following the entertainment, Dame Sandra and the other officials mingled with the patients, including 105-year-old Chesterfield Clinton, who engaged her in a lively conversation, before she toured the hospital to meet some of the other staff and patients. (DH)
