Atkinson wins two bronze
TORONTO – Anthony Atkinson of Chatham won two bronze medals for the Windsor Lancers at the OUA track and field championship on the weekend.
Atkinson was third in the men’s shot put with a personal-best throw of 14.93 metres. He ranks 10th in Canada.
The McGregor graduate was also third in the weight throw with 15.07 metres.
Lancers teammate Cai Kellier of Chatham tied for fifth in the men’s high jump with 1.89 metres.
Deleary, Stokes golden
CKSS graduates Mattea Deleary and Matthew Stokes won gold medals with the Fanshawe Falcons at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball championships on the weekend.
Deleary, of Ridgetown, had two kills for the Falcons in a 3-0 win over the Niagara Knights in the OCAA women’s final Sunday in Sudbury.
The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championship is March 7-9 in Welland.
Stokes, of Dover Centre, is on the Falcons men’s team. They beat the Humber Hawks 3-2 in the OCAA men’s final Saturday in Toronto.
The CCAA championship is March 6-9 in Red Deer, Alta.
Carleton leads Cyclones
AMES, Iowa – Bridget Carleton of Chatham scored a game-high 28 points for the No. 20 Iowa State Cyclones in a 73-60 loss to the No. 1 Baylor Bears in NCAA basketball Saturday.
Carleton scored 20 points in the second half. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Baylor is 25-1 overall and 15-0 in the Big 12.
Iowa State (20-7, 10-5 Big 12) will visit Texas Tech on Tuesday.
Kucera leading scorer
WINDSOR – Jana Kucera of Chatham scored a game-high 24 points in the St. Clair Saints’ 71-47 win over the Seneca Sting in an OCAA women’s basketball playoff game Saturday.
The Saints advance to the OCAA championship that starts Thursday in Kingston. They’ll face Algonquin in a quarter-final.
Durston extends streak
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jordan Durston of Wallaceburg had a goal and an assist in the Buffalo Bandits’ 16-9 win over the Rochester Knighthawks in the National Lacrosse League on Friday.
Durston has scored in four consecutive games.
He has eight goals and 23 assists in 11 games.
Bechard, Gryphons out
THUNDER BAY – Burke Bechard of Dover Centre scored 14 points for the Guelph Gryphons in a 79-71 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in an OUA women’s basketball quarter-final Saturday.
Bechard led the Gryphons with 11 rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Lakehead is ranked No. 7 in Canada.
Jr. Lancers lose final
WINDSOR – Nathan Hanson scored 22 points and Zack Myers added 16 for the Ursuline Lancers in a 70-63 loss to the Herman Green Griffins in the SWOSSAA ‘AAA’ junior boys’ basketball final Friday.
The Lancers led by 10 midway through the second quarter. The Griffins rallied for a 27-27 tie, but the Lancers led 33-30 at halftime.
The Griffins outscored the Lancers 27-7 in the third quarter to lead by 17 entering the fourth.
“I’m incredibly proud of our guys because we battled the entire time and chipped away at the lead but just ran out of time,” Lancers coach Jim Dunlop said. “When the game was a halfcourt game we had complete control because they struggled to score against our defence, but, in the end, we turned the ball over over 20 times and allowed Herman to score in transition.”
The Lancers had a 30-5 overall record.
“This is an incredibly gifted group of basketball players with high basketball IQ and I’m so proud of how much time and effort they invested in each other this season,” Dunlop said.
