Balkwill signs with Dogs

Veteran catcher Larry Balkwill of Chatham has signed with the Chicago Dogs of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

Balkwill is joining a new team and a new league after playing four seasons in the Frontier League with the Windy City ThunderBolts.

Both are Illinois teams close to Chicago.

Balkwill, 27, batted .221 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs in 85 games in 2018.

He was an all-star in 2017 while setting career-highs in most offensive categories. He hit .268 and led the ThunderBolts with 20 homers, 64 RBIs and a .521 slugging percentage.

The former Detroit Tigers draft pick is going into his sixth pro season.

The Dogs debuted in 2018. They’re managed by former Boston Red Sox third baseman Butch Hobson.
