Police urge online safety talks with teens after explicit Snapchat request

A 17-year-old Chatham male is facing more legal problems in connection to violating conditions of his parole that involved inappropriate activity on social media.

Chatham-Kent police said the teen’s probation order, entered into on Jan. 2, states he not possess or use any computer or device that has Internet access. He is also not to contact anyone under the age of 18 using any device that has Internet access, police said.

On Jan. 20, police said messages  were sent using the social media platform Snapchat to a 16-year-old girl offering to pay money for explicit photos of her 16-year-old boyfriend.

Police said messages were also sent Snapchat messages directly to the boyfriend asking him to perform sexual acts.

Neither complied with the requests and police were notified.

Police said the accused was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with communicating for the purposes of obtaining sexual services and two counts of failing to comply with his probation order.

He was released with a March 4 court date.

Police remind parents to be vigilant about their child’s online activity, adding that having conversations about their online safety is important.

Monday night, police said information was received the man and woman were involved in a disturbance.

He was charged with failing to comply and taken to the courthouse and placed in custody pending a bail hearing
